Self-Indulgence is Not Your Pursuit

Life is consumed by selfish ambitions and lofty desires that cause one to become greedy in their pursuit for purpose. We as mankind are never satisfied with the contentment of enough. We constantly find ourselves on the grind of self-gratification in order to pamper our ego. One definition of self is “a particular side of a person’s character”. In essence what is your reputation when it comes to you? Are you totally opposite than what you portray to others? I can remember a time in my life when I didn’t care about what people thought when it came to pleasing and spoiling myself. If it was fulfilling my desire, everything and everybody became obsolete to me. This kind of attitude can lead you on a pursuit that will never be quenched. The pursuit that prospers is a pursuit that is unselfish.
Ecclesiastes 2:11 gives a very powerful revelation concerning Self-indulgence. It reads, “Then I
considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was
vanity and striving after wind and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” A thought to
ponder –
1) What pleases you now will displease you later. There will come a moment when you will
evaluate the uses of your time and consider the value that has been added to your purpose
as well as weigh the moments that wasted an era of your life which fulfilled absolutely
nothing to your purpose.
2) A life that is constantly evaluated is a life that has values.
3) Don’t be so engulfed with Life’s Livings that you forget to live your life on purpose.
Solomon understood this best when he penned this second chapter and the first 10 verses
of Ecclesiastes. He began to identify elements of indulgence that create egoistical idols
within oneself.
Be blessed,
